Merbromin, or mercurochrome, is a mercury compound that was once used as a topical antispetic to treat minor scrapes and cuts. In some countries, it is still used. However, in more industrial societies, it is now prohibited.
In dentistry, amalgam is an alloy of mercury with various metals used for dental fillings. It commonly consists of mercury(50%), silver(22-32%), tin (14%), copper(8%), and other trace metals. Recently, however, its popularity has diminished due to its toxicity level.
Ethylmercury (an organic derivative of mercury) is one of the metabollies of Thimersal. which is used as a preservative in some vaccines. Thimerosal has been added to some vaccines and other products as a preservative because it is effective in killing bacteria and in preventing bacterial contamination, particularly in multidose containers. An example of Thimerosal being used in vaccines is the Influenza (flu) vaccines.
